Our Story & Our Purpose

Student-Led. Adult-Supported. Future-Ready.
Problem Solvers → Student Leaders → Innovators → Entrepreneurs → Community Impact

Divergent Teams Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to developing people and teams through shared experiences, project-based leadership, STEM and innovation, teamwork, social-emotional learning, and real-world problem solving.

Our Purpose is simple

Create experiences that help people discover their strengths, develop the confidence to lead, build stronger teams, and use what they learn to make a positive impact in their communities.

We believe meaningful growth happens when people move beyond simply learning concepts and have the opportunity to experience, practice, reflect, lead and apply what they have learned. That belief is at the heart of everything we do.

WHERE IT STARTED

Transforming Teams Through Shared Experiences

Divergent Teams was built around a simple idea:

People grow when they experience something meaningful together.

Experience What it develops
A team-building challenge Communication
An expedition Resilience
A leadership experience Responsibility
A project Collaboration
A hackathon Turning an idea into something real

But the greatest impact happens when those experiences are connected.

Our programs bring people together through physical, cognitive, social and strategic challenges that encourage participants to listen, collaborate, solve problems, take initiative and support one another.

We use experiential learning as a bridge between knowledge and action.

Our Three Foundations

01 - Team Building

Strong teams are built through shared experiences.

Our team-building programs help participants develop:
  • Trust
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Belonging
  • Collective problem-solving
  • Leadership
  • Accountability
  • Resilience

We create challenges that encourage teams to move beyond individual strengths and develop a collective mindset.

The goal is not simply to have fun together.
The goal is to become better at working together.

02 - Leadership Development

Leadership Is an Action, Not a Title

Our leadership programs give participants opportunities to practice:
    • Taking initiative
    • Facilitating teams
    • Making decisions
    • Communicating with confidence
    • Giving and receiving feedback
    • Managing challenges
    • Supporting peers
    • Leading projects
    • Reflecting and improving

For young people especially, leadership development becomes more powerful when they are trusted with real responsibility.

That belief led us to develop our Project-Based Leadership model.

03 - Expeditions

New York City as a Classroom

Our team-building expeditions use physical and outdoor experiences in New York City as a classroom for leadership and teamwork.
Participants encounter genuine challenges that require them to:
  • Leadership
  • Trust
  • Resilience
  • Communication
  • Decision-making
  • Team dynamics
  • Personal growth

The lessons learned during an expedition can then be carried back into schools, organizations, workplaces and communities.

What happens when students don’t just participate—but lead?

From Team Building to Student Innovation

Over time, our work with young people led us to ask a bigger question:

What happens when we give students not only the opportunity to participate—but the responsibility to lead?

Instead of treating students simply as participants, we develop them into:

Student Leaders → Coaches → Hackathon Facilitators → Innovators → Community Problem Solvers

That question became the foundation of the Divergent Hackathon and our Project-Based Leadership ecosystem.

Adult + Student partnership

Adults remain an essential part of the model.

Student Leaders → Coaches → Hackathon Facilitators → Innovators → Community Problem Solvers
Educators, mentors, technology professionals, entrepreneurs and community volunteers provide the support that makes student leadership possible.

Students provide:

Curiosity + Ideas + Leadership + Energy + Ownership
Students bring the curiosity, ideas and ownership that turn experiences into action.
Together, they create something much larger than a traditional program.

Students Don’t Just Participate. They Lead.

The Divergent Student Innovation Model

Through our Project-Based Leadership framework, students learn how to design, organize and execute innovation experiences for their peers.

The journey is:

LEARN → PRACTICE → LEAD → COACH → FACILITATE → MULTIPLY

Students learn to:

  • Identify meaningful community problems
  • Fall in love with a problem worth solving
  • Research and understand the challenge
  • Design possible solutions

  • Apply STEM and AI
  • Build prototypes
  • Work effectively in teams
  • Communicate their ideas
  • Pitch like entrepreneurs
  • Coach other students
  • Lead hackathon experiences
  • Reflect and continuously improve
The objective is not simply to teach students how to participate in a hackathon.
The objective is to teach students how to create opportunities for other students.

The Divergent Hackathon Framework

Problem → Solution → Prototype → Pitch → Impacts

A Divergent Hackathon begins with a simple question:
What problem in your community do you care enough about to solve?
Students then work through a hands-on innovation cycle:
01

Identify a Problem

02

Understand the Community

03

Design a Solution

04

Use STEM & AI

05

Build a Prototype

06

Develop the Story

07

Pitch the Solution

08

Receive Feedback

09

Improve

10

Explore Real-World Impact

Students learn that innovation is not simply about technology.
It is about understanding people, identifying meaningful problems and creating solutions that can make a difference.
THE LEADERSHIP MULTIPLIER

One Student Leader Can Create Opportunities for Many More

One of the most important ideas behind Divergent Teams is the Leadership Multiplier. Instead of adults having to lead every experience, we develop students who can eventually lead and coach their peers.

01

Student

Learns and participates.

02

Student Leader

Takes responsibility for a project or team.

03

Coach

Helps another student learn.

04

Hackathon Facilitator

Leads an experience for other students.

05

Innovator

Creates solutions to meaningful problems.

06

Entrepreneur

Explores opportunities to develop the idea further.

07

Community Problem Solver

Uses knowledge and experience to create lasting impact.

This creates a multiplier effect.

The goal is not to build one successful student.
The goal is to build students who can help other students succeed.

A POWERFUL PROOF POINT

Global Kids × Divergent Teams

One of our most meaningful demonstrations of this model has been our partnership with the Global Kids Summer Youth Employment Program, working with NYC public school students from Queens and the Bronx.

The Project-Based Leadership cohort brought together more than 25 students for an intensive experience focused on:

Leadership Team Development Communication Collaboration Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Problem Identification Solution Design STEM and AI Prototype Development Pitching Team Facilitation Continuous Improvement Social-Emotional Leadership

Students spent weeks developing their leadership and innovation capabilities.

But the most important part came next.

STUDENTS BECAME COACHES

From Participants to Leaders

Rather than simply graduating from the program, the student leaders became coaches and facilitators for the next group of students.

On August 12, 2026, they helped launch and facilitate a new Global Kids Hackathon at Microsoft's Times Square facility in New York City.

8 Teams
8 Problems
8 Solutions
8 Prototype-Building Efforts
8 Pitches

Students addressed real community challenges and developed technology-enabled solutions.

They were not simply following instructions. They were leading.

NYC MAYOR'S OFFICE RECOGNITION

A Recognition of Student-Led Innovation

Divergent Teams was honored with a Certificate of Recognition from the City of New York on August 12, 2026.

The certificate recognized Divergent Teams on the occasion of its Project-Based Leadership and Youth Innovation Day.

The recognition highlighted our efforts to empower high school students across the five boroughs and beyond by giving them a platform to apply their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to identify and build solutions to real-world problems.

The recognition also celebrated the next generation of talented New Yorkers and the importance of ensuring that New York City remains an accessible and prosperous place for all.

For us, the recognition is meaningful because it reinforces what we believe:

Young people are not simply the future. They can be active contributors to solving today's challenges when we give them the opportunity, responsibility and support to lead.
FROM REGIONAL HACKATHONS TO A NATIONAL PLATFORM

Divergent National Cup

The Divergent Hackathon ecosystem gives students opportunities to develop solutions in their local communities.

The Divergent National Cup creates an opportunity for regional student innovators to bring those ideas together on a larger stage.

01
NATIONAL BUILD DAY
July 18, 2026

Students worked together to develop and refine their solutions, prototypes and presentations.

02
NATIONAL PITCH DAY
July 19, 2026

Students presented their solutions to judges, mentors, educators, entrepreneurs and technology professionals.

The National Cup represents an important part of our vision:

Local Problems Regional Innovation National Collaboration

But we believe the competition should be only the beginning.

Promising student ideas should have opportunities to continue through:

Prototype Mentorship Pilot Research College Career Startup / Social Impact
BEYOND THE HACKATHON

Building Pathways to College, Careers and Entrepreneurship

A student who learns how to identify a problem, lead a team, build a prototype and pitch an idea is developing more than technical skills.

They are developing experiences that can help them navigate college, careers and entrepreneurship.

Divergent experiences give students opportunities to demonstrate:

01

Leadership

“I led a team.”

02

STEM & AI

“I used technology to solve a problem.”

03

Entrepreneurship

“I developed and presented an idea.”

04

Communication

“I pitched my solution to professionals.”

05

Collaboration

“I worked with people who had different perspectives.”

06

Resilience

“I encountered obstacles and continued.”

07

Community Impact

“I worked on a problem that mattered to my community.”

These experiences can become part of a student's broader college and career story.

OUR PURPOSE

We Want Students to Become the Force That Builds the Future

Our purpose extends beyond organizing events. We want to create an ecosystem where young people progressively develop the confidence and capability to lead.

Participants
Student Leaders
Coaches
Hackathon Facilitators
Innovators
Entrepreneurs
Community Problem Solvers

And throughout the journey, adults remain beside them.

Student-led does not mean student-alone. It means adults provide the mentorship, resources, expertise, connections and encouragement that allow young people to take ownership.
OUR VISION FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER

Divergent National Cup II

New York City | July 15–16, 2027

We are now building toward Divergent National Cup II in New York City.

THE DIVERGENT PHILOSOPHY

The Divergent Philosophy

We believe:

01

Everyone has strengths worth discovering.

02

Teams become stronger when people learn to trust and support one another.

03

Leadership grows through responsibility and practice.

04

Innovation begins with empathy for a real problem.

05

Technology is most powerful when it solves a meaningful human need.

06

Young people deserve opportunities to lead—not just opportunities to participate.

07

Adults have an important role to play as mentors, coaches and supporters.

08

The best learning happens when people experience, reflect, apply and improve.

And most importantly:
We believe it is possible.

Our Story Continues

From a team-building challenge…
to an expedition…
to a leadership experience…
to a student-led project…
to a hackathon…
to a prototype…
to a pitch…
to a potential startup, career or community solution…
Divergent Teams creates experiences that help people discover what they are capable of—and then use that capability to help others.
